As we officially launch Agent Mantis this week, we thought it was worth sharing the idea behind our name — not just for fun, but because it reflects how we think about testing and quality at a fundamental level.
A Name With Intent
At its core, Agent Mantis speaks to two things we deeply care about:
1. Agents that work for you We liked the idea of “Agent” in the name — a nod to both secret agents and the software agents that tirelessly handle complex tasks in the background. The goal of our platform is similar: autonomous, reliable, and always focused on delivering clarity without burdening your team.
2. Seeing differently (and earlier) This is where Mantis comes in.
We took inspiration from the mantis shrimp, a marine creature with one of the most sophisticated visual systems in the animal kingdom. Unlike humans, who have three types of photoreceptors, many mantis shrimp species can have up to 16, each tuned to a different part of the light spectrum. That means they can detect subtle variations in colour and contrast that are completely invisible to us. Even the most well-camouflaged creatures can’t escape a mantis shrimp’s gaze.
In testing terms, that’s a powerful metaphor.
What Seeing Differently Means for Testing
In software quality today, just running tests isn’t enough. The real value comes from detecting issues others don’t:
- edge cases that slip through traditional suites
- updates that break the happy path
- intermittent or flaky behaviour
- regressions that reach your customers first
Agent Mantis is built to look deeper and wider — not just executing workflows, but surfacing what’s really happening under the hood so your team can act with confidence.
More Than a Name
So yes — there’s a bit of science and a bit of nerdiness in our name. But there’s also intention. We chose it to remind ourselves and our customers every day:
Great testing isn’t just about automation — it’s about insight.
We’re excited to launch Agent Mantis and to help teams see what others don’t. 🚀
